چکیده

A careful study is made on the lattice of the phase diagram of QCD with two staggered flavors, to investigate the order of the chiral transition of N f = 2 QCD. The specific heat and the susceptibility of the chiral condensate are determined for different spatial sizes of the system, and a finite size scaling analysis provides a determination of the (pseudo)critical indices. The result is a strong indication that the chiral transition is first order.

The phase structure of QCD with various number of flavors is studied for Wilson quarks. For the case of NF = 3 we find that the finite temperature deconfining transition is of first order in the chiral limit on an Nt = 4 lattice. Together with our previous results that the deconfining transition in the chiral limit is continuous for NF = 2 and is first order for NF = 6, the order of the transit...

We discuss different aspects of the quark mass dependence of the chiral and deconfinement transitions. We make predictions for locating the deconfining critical point, by analyzing the mq dependence of the ratio of imaginary and real mass of the Polyakov loop. We then present an effective theory that allows the extraction of coupling constants from available lattice data for the temperature dep...

Decompactification of space or time in large N QCD 2

QCD 2 with fundamental quarks on a cylinder is solved to leading order in the 1/N expansion, including the zero mode gluons. As a result of the non-perturbative dynamics of these gauge degrees of freedom, the compact space-time direction gets effectively decompactified. In a thermodynamic interpretation, this implies that there is no pressure of order N and that the chiral condensate of order N...

Notes on the Deconfining Phase Transition

I review the deconfining phase transition in an SU(N) gauge theory without quarks. After computing the interface tension between Z(N) degenerate vacua deep in the deconfined phase, I follow Giovannangeli and Korthals Altes, and suggest a new model for (discrete) Polyakov loop spins. Effective theories for (continuous) Polyakov loop spins are constructed, including those with Z(N) charge greater...

We consider QCD near but above critical temperature Tc. The pressure, susceptibilities and the renormalized Polyakov loop — which is an order parameter for the deconfining phase transition — dramatically change up to temperatures a few times Tc. We refer to this region as a ”semi”QGP, where partial confinement plays important role. We show that the shear viscosity η is suppressed by two powers ...
